Your Audience Will Forget Everything You Say
Study after study proves that the public retains very little of what they hear.
But too often, media spokespersons and public speakers load their delivery with way too much detail.
In this video media training tip, I’ll cite a couple of my favorite facts about memory – and give you a few keys to being remembered.
Brad, question: Does today’s “fact checking” world, blogosphere world, especially inside the beltway, cause some spokepersons to include to many details and hedges? I think you see this all the time when economists and lawyers speak, everything is hedged and expressed with uncertainty (probably some layover from reading and writing academic work). I think Paul Krugman, Milton Freidman, Austan Goolsbee and a few others have been able to overcome this a bit, but IMHO they are the exception.
Mike –
Sorry for the delayed reply. Your question deserves its own blog post – I’ll likely write about this topic sometime during the next week or two.
Thanks, as always, for your loyal readership!
